Profiles

Welcome to the Profiles section of Carfree World. Embarking on carfree living is made easier with role models, and thankfully there are many such individuals. Actual individuals and families are featured here to help illustrate the benefits and shed the mystery surrounding a carfree life. Nominations are welcome and can be submitted using the form below. To get the ball rolling, I’ve included three well-known examples of carless living. My hope is to fill this page with examples of people from all walks of life who live less car dependent lives.

Carla Saulter – Seattle, WA

Saulter, aka Bus Chick, is a lifelong bus rider who is devoted to carfree living. Saulter's blog chronicles her daily experiences riding the bus and serves as a guide for going anywhere in Seattle without a car.

Siel (aka Green LA Girl) – Santa Monica, CA

Green LA Girl writes about all things green, and offers her own sage advice for living without a car in Southern California. Green LA Girl is an articulate advocate for living in walkable neighborhoods, which do exist in L.A.

Kathryn Maese – Los Angeles, CA

Maese writes for the Los Angeles Downtown News, and wrote this article about her decision to go carless. Maese lives in downtown LA and benefits from the confluence there of LA's expanded transit options.

Alan Durning – Seattle, WA

Durning is the Executive Director of Sightline Institute. The Durning’s family car was totaled in February 2006 and the family has gone carless since. Durning has chronicled his family’s adventures with this series.

Kent Peterson - Issaquah, WA

The Peterson family, as described in this Seattle Time article, has lived in the Seattle suburbs for almost 20 years without a car. Like Durning, Peterson is a thoughtful, articulate spokesperson for the carless lifestyle, and has posted his thoughts on cycling and life on these two websites.

Chris Balish – Los Angeles, CA

Balish is the author of a guide to living without a car, and lives carfree in Southern California. Balish has done much to popularize carfree living, particularly in areas believed to be inhospitable to such lifestyles.
